Mind Mapping

Node in RecMind is actually a topic. In this document, node and topic are exchangable. Please keep the concept in mind. Property Tool Bar in this tutorial means the panel floating on the top right corner of the mind mapping canvas by default.

Add Mind Nodes

When new mind map file is created, a root node is added automatically. Then you can construct a large mind map by adding nodes to the root and its sub topics.

With one node selected, new topics can be added to the existed one in some ways:

Insert child topic

Child topic of the selection node can be added in three ways:

  • Press <TAB>.
  • Use the property tool bar: Insert Topic (The button on the left most) -> Insert Child.
  • Use the context menu Mouse Right Click -> Popup Menu -> Insert Chilid.
Insert Sibling Topic Before

Sibling topic before the selected node can be added in two ways:

  • Use the property tool bar: Insert Topic (The button on the left most) -> Insert Sibling Before.
  • Use the context menu Mouse Right Click -> Popup Menu -> Insert Sibling Topic Before.
Insert Sibling Topic After

Sibling topic after the selected node can be added in two ways:

  • Press <ENTER>.
  • Use the property tool bar: Insert Topic (The button on the left most) -> Insert Sibling After.
  • Use the context menu Mouse Right Click -> Popup Menu -> Insert Sibling Topic After.
Inset Parent

Parent topic of the selected node can be added in two ways:

  • Use the property tool bar: Insert Topic (The button on the left most) -> Insert Parent.
  • Use the context menu Mouse Right Click -> Popup Menu -> Insert Parent Topic.

Set Icons

Topic nodes can own multiple icons.

  • use the property tool bar: Add Icon or Pixmap -> Popup Icon Panel, select one from the list, or click the Browse Icon Library to open the icon browser and select a suitable icon, or click From File to open the file dialog and pick one from the local file system.

Icons are organized in groups. For example, all the face icons belong to the same group. When an icon of the group is added to a node, you can easily switch between all the icons of the same group by click the icon drawn on the node. It will loop over the whole group.

You can also right click the icons on a node, then a menu contains availiable icons to switch to in the same group, and a menu item for deleting the icon.

Attach File

File can be attached to a node, providing the ability to embed more material or information to the topics. For the current version of RecMind, the file attached is actually a full-path to the file, then users can open the file by clickying the link.

File is attached to the selected node by using the property toolbar: Attach File -> File Dialog -> Browse and select the file.

Further operations is availiable when you right click on the attached file icon on the nodes, you can delete/add more files using the popup menu.

Add Note

Note is extra text information for a topic. Normally, it is used to provide clearifications or records. Notes can be added by using the property toolbar.

  • Edit Note -> Popup Edit Dialog -> Edit and Submit.

Notes can also be removed or modified by right click on the note icon of the nodes.

Group Nodes

Nodes (Topics) can be grouped, providing logical meanings for mind mapping. Group nodes are marked with a square shape with semi-transarent background and a border. Extra title or tags can be added to the group, just double click the group shape, the edit focus will be set and you can start writing the tags.

Nodes can be added to or removed from an existed group. Just select the nodes to added or removed, drag them inside/outside the group, and the group will reform its shape according to the nodes it contains.

New node added to the nodes inside a group will also become one of the group.

Layout Nodes

The layout of mind map topics is fully customizable, and layout styles can be set to nodes in any level. By default, the root node layouts it sub topics in Mind Map style, which places all the nodes around it along ellipse like track.

  • Layout Nodes -> Select Layout Style from the List

Currently, the supported layout styles are listed below:

  • Mind Map
  • Mind Map Clockwise
  • Mind Map Anti-Clockwise
  • Organization Downside
  • Organization Upside
  • Tree to the left
  • Tree to the right
  • Logic to the left
  • Logic to the right

Task Assignment

Task assignment is an important concept of RecMind. You can set the task specified by the node to a person. Configurable information includes Priority, Status, Due Date, Assigned To.

  • Task Information -> Task Editor -> Set the task assignment information and save.

When a node is assigned with a task information, an task icon shows up on the right side of the node. Right click on the icon will trigger a menu for editing.
